His range of training videos – the Peter Hart Masterclass Series – have won 4 international awards and sell all over the world from NZ to the UK to the US. Covering every aspect of windsurfing from raw beginnings right through to freestyle and wave sailing, they have brought help and happiness to just about every improving windsurfer on the planet.
"The program-making career happened very suddenly. I had started putting together the first advanced teaching syllabus for the RYA. I told Phil Jones, the national coach, that video had to be the best teaching tool to accompany the written manuals but didn't know really where to start especially since video production was crazily expensive. But then Falcon Sailing (now Neilson) got wind of the project and thought it would be a great way to promote their new centre in Vassiliki. They had a tie-up with a production company and so within 3 weeks of conception, I was sat on a Greek beach with a camera stuck in my face and a direcor saying: 'Go on, say something.' That first program Beyond the Barrier does have a certain, amateur, unscripted quality but it got the information across and the quality of the action shots was way ahead of its time - it also had the massive advantage of being the only advanced training program out there!"
Peter spotted a big hole in the market and saw instructional programs as a way to extend his role in windsurfing beyond the fragile world of racing. In 1992 he became a partner in a production company Acrobat TV so he could learn more about the business and have some control over the projects. He turned out to be be quite good at it.
"Of all the things I do, I guess making the videos and DVDs probably gives me the most pleasure. It's so varied. I'm involved at every level, the writing, presenting, specialist camera work, editing, marketing and more recently, the composing and playing of the soundtrack. It's all very satisfying as people really seem to appreciate them and we get such wonderfully positive and grateful feedback."
Away from windsurfing, Peter has transplanted his coaching and presenting skills into a number of other sports. He makes all the official training programs for the Bristish Association of Ski and Snowboard Instructors.
He has also teamed up with Olympic gold medallist Tim Foster to make a series of rowing training programs.
Outside the video/DVD world Peter has made numerous TV and radio appearances. In the early 90s he achieved something of a star status when for 2 years he presented two series of the WINDSURF program on terrestial TV.
