Where: staying in 3 beautiful rented houses on the Maharees just behind Straggane Bay, a short walk from the famous Green Room Pub . The houses back onto the sea. They're warm and functional all the essential mods and cons. '
You WILL shake and stagger at the beauty of their location

you may get to sail with Funghi the famous dolphin |
What: it’s an ‘introduction to …/improve your ...wave sailing course. We go through the theory, the tactics, the skills and techniques of riding and jumping waves.
Our houses sit right next to Straggane Bay - a glorious free-ride spot that also allows us to sort out a few skills - tacks, gybes etc - when the need arises.
When conditions allow, surfing and Stand-Up Paddling (SUP)is also a big part of the week.Note the accommodation price includes use of the Knox centre SUPs and surfboards.
. A bit of simulation on the lawn
The position of the houses on the edge of the peninsula is perfect; |
Equipment:
Bring your own. However the Jamie Knox Centre has a selection of demo Goyas for rent or demo And I will will have a van full of tasty Starboards.
Ideally you want a free-ride/free-move allrounder that takes a 6.5 and gets you going in 15 knots of wind; and, of course, a wave board.
One of the key and most overlooked wave riding skills is that of being able to 'bog' out on days when the swell is clean but the wind is light. The ideal weapon for that is a floaty 90 ish litre wave board.
If you're driving over, you might as well bring everything! |
Standard:
It’s a wave sailing course so you have to able to waterstart 100% and be happy sailing a small sub 100 litre board on the open sea. However, more important than being able to crack out sweet planing gybes, is water confidence. If you’re fit and happy splashing around in breaking surf, you’ll be fine. |
What's it all about.
It's a mobile course. We all have cars or vans. Every morning, informed by local knowledge, we head to whichever part of the peninsula is providing the best wind and swell direction.
Often we'll have two sessions a day changing venue perhaps to move from a jumping to a riding bias - or a even a flat water skills session
. In the evenings we replay the action on the big screen at one of the houses, before eating out at the famous Spillanes or one of many other excellent pubs or restaurants in the area. |

GETTING THERE ...
Transport: most choose to drive but there's a Ryan Air service from Stanstead to Kerry Airport (approx 40 mins from the centre)
Ferry:
For those lving south of Birmingham, the overnight Swansea/Cork ferry with its excellent bar and Irish quality Guiness, offers the easiest and most stressless route.
There has been just a little doubt cast over its contunued exitence. Services have been suspended
over the winter. They're due to start again in April 2012 and the ARE taking bookings- but watch this space.
It's a 10 hour overnight crossing leaving Wales at 9pm and arriving in Cork at 7 am. From there it's just a 2.5 hour easy drive to Brandon Bay.
If it's not working Stena and Irish Ferries run a service from Fisguard/Pembroke to Rosslaire.
Coming from the north of England, Stena and Irish Ferries from Holyhead to Dublin is the way.
