There's a growing bunch of wizened windsurfing types who have spent the best part of their lives travelling the globe in search of windsurfing perfection, who believe they've enow found it in Brazil.
I run out of superlatives trying to describe the phenomenon that is 'Jeri'. For a start there is no better way to combat the post-Christmas Blues. Imagine, as others in the UK battle through sleet and freezing fog in the dark to get to work, you launch onto blood temperature water, and plane in a sideshore wind, towards smooth, beautifully formed non-life-threatening waves. Jeri is the windy dream - not just on account of the conditions that suit free-rider, freestyler and aspirant wave-sailor alike, but also becausee it takes 'laid-back' and relaxing to new levels. Great accom, great food, great place.
Many rate it above such
hotspots as Maui an Western Oz for its accessibility, friendliness, beauty and reliability.
Getting there.
It's a scheduled flight via Lisbon to FORTALEZA, where we are met by out own four wheel drives.
The transfer to Jei is about 4 hours. The last hour is completely off road along the beach. It's awesome.
The Place
Jeri lies in a huge national park on Brazil's north coast almost on the equator. It;'s a unique town built on sand. The vibe is non stop fun, laughter and action and laid-back to the point of horizontal. Excellent restaurants and more bars than you can shake a stick at fulfil your every need. They're excellent value - too good some might say as they get handed 2 pint size Caiprhinias cocktails for the price of one!
The Accommodation
We offer 2 pckages - self-catering and Poshy-Nobby beachfront hotel - understandably there's quite a price difference.
1. Casa de John are really well built, clean, tasteful oen plan apartments a 5 minute walk from the beach. Having the apartments next to each other creates a great neighbourly, group atmosphere. The 'John' is Casa de John, is a top bloke, a windsurfing Brit who lives on site and is a mine of information and help.
2. Mosquito Blue. It's a beautiful hotel on the foreshore just a spit from the hire centre. Non windsurfing partners will be very impressed.
Food
We suggest B and B or roolm only because the restaurants in town are plentiful, varied, excellent and great value. In fact they're such good value that last year us self-caterers chose to eat breakfast at the local cafe. £5 for fresh fruit, coffee and the eggs and bacon. Why wouldn't you?
, The Conditions
Although it sells itself as a wave spot, Jeri has a high tide lagoon, flatter that the proverbial mill pond a perfect for manoeuvre training.
The waves wrap round a point and are well formed without being death defying. There's no shorebreak so its perfect for first time wave-sailors and pros alike. Better still it's absolutely perfect for coaching.
The waves in January, when we have the clinic, are at their best. The wind is typically around the 20 knot mark - and from the right (yipeee!)
